What is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, harboring, or receipt of people for the purposes of slavery, forced labor (including bonded labor or debt bondage), and people trafficking has reached epidemic proportions over the past decade.

In October 2000, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) was enacted. Prior to that, no comprehensive Federal law existed to protect victims of trafficking or to prosecute their traffickers.  Many individuals do not believe that human trafficking exists in the U.S.  Modern-day slavery is not recognized even when survivors are directly encountered.

What Coptic Orthodox Charities Does

Coptic Orthodox Charities, Inc. advocates on behalf of the victims and provide outreach in the community. We work closely with the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to file for the “T” or “U” visa and acquire the relief and legal status for the victims. COC also works with community service providers to provide the human trafficking victims with food, shelter, medical, psychological treatment, other services as needed to help these individuals restore their lives, their freedoms, and achieve self-sufficiency.
